Finding Accommodation That's Perfect for a Good Night's Sleep

Blog

Whether you're travelling for business or leisure, sometimes a good night's sleep becomes your top priority when you're choosing hotel accommodation. Although many places will boast about their comfy beds, sometimes it's the smaller details that can make or break whether you get a good rest. Knowing what they are will make it easier for you to refine your modern accommodation search.

Blackout blinds

Crossing over more than four time zones, travelling at a late hour or needing a pre-flight nap should all call for good blackout blinds. One of the biggest barriers to a decent night's sleep is light disturbance from both natural and manmade sources. It's possible to argue that natural light is the worst culprit, as it signals to your brain that it's time to wake up. In addition to finding blackout blinds, consider wearing an eye mask to tackle light leaks.

Watch out for building works

Few hotels will make it obvious that they're undergoing repairs or renovation, and even fewer will admit to nearby building works. However, periods of renovation are usually advertised somewhere on a business's site, and the staff working there will need to provide an honest answer if you call and ask about nearby disruptions. Although earplugs are always an option, they may not block out loud and sharp noises. As such, if you want to sleep during daytime hours or sleep in late, avoid accommodation that's close to building works.

Avoid those that have busy bars and clubs

It isn't unusual for hotels and other types of accommodation to feature onsite bars and clubs. But if they have late opening hours and they're situated beneath certain rooms, this can become a problem. Before booking your accommodation, check the reviews to look for evidence of noisy party areas keeping guests awake. If such complaints are frequent, avoid placing the booking altogether.

Arrange for a room away from a lift or ice machine

Even when accommodation ticks all the right boxes in terms of providing a restful environment, some rooms will be less than ideal. If yours is close to a lift or an ice machine, you may face noise disruption throughout the night. Before confirming your booking, call the hotel and specifically request that you're not placed close to such features.

With a bit of research and a few specific requests, you can make sure your hotel accommodation is conducive to an excellent night's sleep.

I started this blog after an 8-week stay in a premier hotel in downtown Sydney. I was in town for business and my client was picking up the bill so I got to stay in a super cool place. During my stay, I got friendly with some of the staff and they gave me some advice about the steps I should take to find the best hotel accommodation. Read on to find out more. Enjoy!
